Hazardous energy is the energy that can causes injury or material damage when it is unexpectedly or accidently released.
There are two main forms: the kinetic energy from motion (as in the case of a rotary shaft) and the potential energy in the form of stored energy, which turns into kinetic energy when released (as in the case of a stretched spring).
Hazardous energies must be controlled in the industries around the world - as per the 1910.147 directive of the OSHA standard which is widely applied in the USA.
This control is possible with the LOTO (EKED) system.

We started the process of commissioning the vital EKED (Lock out – Tag out) system in our factory in 2015. The instructions that we initially consider on equipment basis transformed into a different maintenance on each equipment so the necessity to apply 100 different lock out – tag put instruction came up. Following a very successfully realized EKED (LOTO) Training and determination of equipment and locking devices carried out with our on-site maintenance department, the instructions were started to be written. Taking the photographs manually, matching those photographs with the corresponding equipment and writing the instructions were taking some much time. In the next visit of Dear Baran, the remaining 75% was completed with a work over EKEDPRO software within a day. Since we are a small factory, we preferred to rent the software but large factories can purchase and use the software easily in their own premises.
With EKEDPRO, our recently launched EKED system was represented as a benchmark to the other factories of Bozzetto Group by Italy Head Office along with our other Occupational Safety and Maintenance activities. I see this software as a work over the standards of Turkey and the World in the field of Occupational Safety, and think that it will be the source of pride to represent such a project from Turkey in international platforms. When we shared the difficulties we have been experiencing in EKED implementation processes and locking matrices with OHS-R&D, we have learned that the process can be enhanced by digitization.
The locking matrices that we have prepared with EKEDPRO that was developed by OHS-R&D, have provided us a complete identification of all the energy sources on the equipment, and constituted a source for use for the related operation can be completed safely. In addition to contributing to the elimination of human factor errors, EKEDPRO has enabled us to speak the same language in all our operations by improving the communication during the operation process. In 2016, we commenced a work on lock out – tag out in our factory. As regards to the implementation, it was taking so much time to prepare the EKED/LOTO instructions specific to all lines. Also, we needed our instructions to be in a standard format.
Our project team prepared approximately 180 instructions in a week with the EKEDPRO software developed by Dante Technology. In the next process, if there are any switch or valve changes on the machine and line, we can easily revise it over the software. We can practically create the instructions of newly installed machines and lines in our factory. It was very important for us that EKEDPRO software was user-friendly, and our project team consisted of an OHS technician, a machine maintenance and an electrical maintenance technician. After one-day theoretical and practical training of EKEDPRO software, our team easily prepared all the lock out – tag out instructions.
I would like to thank to Dear Baran Sabaz and his team for the top level software that they have developed in occupational health and safety field in this period in which the Digitization and Industry 4.0 has been widely spread in manufacturing industries in our country, and I hope that this software developed by 100% Turkish company will spread in Europe and other world countries in a short time.
